The Quaranzine Playlist #3: Playtime

With a playlist at turns chaotic, melancholic and euphoric, LCYTN leads a journey through the stages of lockdown

My name is Lucy. I am Burmese, but I’ve lived in the UK my whole life. I've been singing since I was 8, composing from 12, producing from 17, and DJ-ing since last year under the name LCYTN.
This playlist highlights the stages of my exploration of “play time” during the pandemic. There are five sequences, organised chronologically.
The first stage is shock, felt worldwide when everything shut down. I added some songs that absorbed and are now reminiscent of that global panic.
The second stage, heartbreak, is a tribute to the many couples separated due to Covid-19 and the love that had been displaced, so I added some songs I moped to whilst I missed my lover.
Heartbreak then gives way to the third stage, isolation, both physical and mental. Eventually, I lost a sense of emotion and time – dissociation vibrations.
The fourth stage represents chaos. Public spaces began to reopen, welcomed back by the sound of Black Lives Matter protests following the killing of George Floyd. Instead of hearing ambulances and claps, my daily noises were bottles breaking and voices shaking. The songs I added echo that sensory rush.
The fifth stage is calm. We’re all still adjusting to a new normal, so I’ve added songs that I’ve been bumping recently.
I hope this playlist brings a larger sense of community to your ears as you wade through each section.
