inhale…exhale…

Inspired by the experiences of friends, loved ones, and students, artist Rosa Freya tackles some of the most trying aspects of this lockdown

By Rosa Freya

This project was influenced by the different aspects of lockdown myself and the people who are close to me have each found the most difficult. The hardest part was related to my current job as a support worker in a college for students who are on the autistic spectrum. Due to their way of thinking, some of the students haven’t understood what ‘lockdown’ meant and have become upset because their routines have been disrupted.

Most of the inspiration has come from my friends. A friend who experienced a tragic sudden death, which deprived her from saying goodbye to a loved one. A friend who has been tied to a home desk and deeply misses the freedom of leaving her house. A friend who expressed the stress of working under pressure in a fast paced commercial environment, and who nonetheless managed to find comedy in these moments. A friend whose PMDD was greatly affected by the lockdown.

This experience, in particular, greatly influenced the design of the main character's ever-extending body and hair. The female menstrual cycle being like the tides of the ocean. The more stressful are the scenarios this woman experiences throughout her day, the wilder and larger her hair becomes.
